4 Ways to Break Out of Your Comfort Zone

4-ways-to-break-out-of-your-comfort-zone

Working toward a goal takes a lot of self-development. You need to accept the work it takes to achieve the goal. You also need to keep pushing yourself to reach greater levels. When you get to a new level of your development, it can feel different and exciting. Sooner or later, though, what was once new and exciting is now normal and routine.

The verdict? You’re in your comfort zone.

And sure, it’s fine to hang out there for a little and give yourself a short rest. But your goals are calling! TaskHuman coaches want to remind you to make sure you’re not there for too long because growth can’t happen as long as you’re stuck in your comfort zone. So—they’ve created a list of four ways to break out of your comfort zone.

1. Go Inside Yourself

We often have the answers to our problems inside ourselves. We just need to get quiet enough to hear what our thoughts and feelings are trying to tell us. Going inward is just as important as giving yourself a little bit of grace. Be honest with yourself, without beating yourself up.

Listen as Coach Reita Johnston explains:

If you’re a list-maker, journaling is a good way to help you get a better understanding of what is keeping you in your comfort zone. When we journal, we allow our deeper thoughts to come forward, and we can often learn something about ourselves that was a little bit hidden.

Coach Sasha Williams explains:

2. Take Baby Steps

Once you realize why you’re in your comfort zone, then you need to work to get out of it. For many TaskHuman coaches, the easiest way out is by recognizing what’s in your comfort zone, and what is not in your comfort zone, and then taking baby steps toward getting out of that stagnated state.

When you make small changes or take small steps outside of your comfort zone, you still feel somewhat “safe.” You recognize the risk is not as great as it could be, so you are more likely to take the step. Making a plan or outline to help guide you can also be a good idea to help you move toward your goal.

Listen as Coach Sara Splitter explains:

3. Design a Challenge

Sometimes we stay in our comfort zone because we’ve achieved the goal. We don’t have anything to work toward.

That’s when creating a new goal or challenge for yourself will help you break out of your comfort zone. The new goal will give you focus and will make you stretch yourself. It doesn’t need to be an extremely difficult challenge. It just needs to be something that will push you.

Listen as Coach Ayushi Mahalwala explains:

Setting up even small challenges can be intimidating. No matter how small the challenge is, you will need to push yourself to do it. Sometimes that is the trick. Just get started. You don’t always need to know everything.

Coach Keven Brown explains:

4. Get a Coach

When we’re working toward a goal, there will be times when we don’t feel like working. Maybe we haven’t seen the progress we want. Or maybe we’re just not motivated. You still need to do the work.

One of the biggest benefits of having a coach is that you have someone to push you when you’re not motivated to push yourself.

Listen as Coach Sudhin Padathil explains:

While we often think of goals as physical—getting stronger, losing a few pounds, or something like that—goals can be in any area of our lives. Having a coach that can help you see your weaknesses and teach you the tools to overcome those weaknesses will help you get out of your comfort zone and make progress toward your goals.

Coach Gene Altidor explains:

Breaking out of your comfort zone is a necessary part of reaching your goals. You need to do something different to accomplish things you haven’t done before. TaskHuman coaches are ready to help guide you through finding where it is, designing challenges, and leading you through the baby steps to leave your comfort zone.
