Accomplish your Goals by Avoiding these 3 Common Mistakes

Goal Setting

Have you tried setting personal wellness goals that end up being way too hard to accomplish? You’re definitely not alone, and it seems as though many of us are making the same goal-setting mistakes.

Not only are these common goal-setting mistakes frustrating and time-consuming, they can also be a complete waste of money (hello expensive juice cleanse!). But the days of goal-setting no-no’s are officially over…thanks to our TaskHuman pros!

Some of our top TaskHuman coaches share the three most common goal-setting mistakes to avoid, and most importantly, their secrets to crushing wellness goals once and for all. Read on to find out what they are!

Mistake #1: Going too BIG

Yes, we know what they say… “Go big or go home.”

Maybe not so fast…

Think about a time when you woke up and decided on a new goal. Imagine you wanted to take up running, so you decided to run a race. In the past, your plan might have gone something like this:

Day 0 = Not a runner.
Day 1 = Train for a marathon.

Seems a little extreme once you put it like that, huh?

Naturally, the idea of accomplishing something puts our brain into overdrive and we think of the biggest, best thing that’ll accomplish the task immediately (like training for a marathon).

Unfortunately, choosing to jump ten miles (or a marathon) ahead puts us in danger of either landing right back where we started, or giving up before we even begin.

The best way to avoid this mistake?

Assess the goal and break it down into bite-sized pieces. Accomplish the first piece, then move to the next.

Before you know it, you’re crossing goals off of your list faster than you can say… “RUN!”

Coach Hally Paulson has some great tips on this very concept.

Mistake #2: Keeping Your Goal a Secret

Instead of letting doubts get the best of you and keeping dreams and plans to yourself, share them.

Are there goals you want to accomplish? Are you ready to give up doing something that’s holding you back? Or do you think you can start implementing something that’ll make your life fuller?

Share this info with a friend, a coach, or even your journal. Just don’t keep your goals a secret.

Once you share your goals, you get to hear yourself say what you want out loud. And, people around you might even do their part to help you get there.

BONUS! When you share your goals, you can even ask someone to hold you accountable. Having someone check in and continue to ask you how it’s going can make all the difference.

Here’s what coach Sedae Slaughter has to say about the idea of accountability.

Mistake #3: Setting Goal and Forgetting it

Most people don’t even realize they’re making this mistake until they wake up one day and notice nothing has happened since day one.

You can avoid this simply by doing a little planning.

For example, if you set a vague goal to “read more books this year.” It could be easy to go on your merry way, never looking back, until you realize that you read exactly zero books.

The best way to avoid it? Make a plan and have regular markers, such as reading one book every eight weeks and checking that off your list as you move forward. Having a set plan and clear mini-goals to work towards along the way will help keep you on track and your eye on the prize.

Coach Hannah Rosenbaum has some great insight into this very thing.

Finally…

Now that you know the top three goal-setting mistakes and how to avoid them, you’re miles ahead of most people.
