TaskHuman Talks: Improve Relationships By Disrupting Your Limiting Beliefs
“Beliefs are definitions of meaning we’ve assigned to certain things, and those can be changed.”
Acts of kindness and the holiday spirit of giving can be powerful forms of energy exchange. But what if you don’t feel it’s reciprocated, especially with friends and family? In this TaskHuman Talks Podcast episode, coaches Jamie Carroll and Richard Van Der Spuy discuss how to look inward and reflect on existing relationship patterns and limiting beliefs you may hold to find harmony and happiness in your relationships during holiday seasons.
How Limiting Beliefs Can Impact Relationship Dynamics
According to Coach Richard, some form of conflict with family or loved ones is to be expected during the holidays. This is because there are pre-existing relationships and history, anticipation, we know each other’s “buttons,” etc. What do these factors have in common? Expectation. “When I’m expecting other people to fall in line with how I’m hoping to be treated and that doesn’t happen, you’re off to a bad start already,” says Coach Richard, who suggests questioning what limiting beliefs you hold ahead of holiday gatherings to approach conversations and relationships with an open mind.
Breaking Relationships Habits & Patterns
Have you ever reflected on the role you adopt in social dynamics? For example, are you a pleaser or a controller? Tap into your self-awareness to break unhelpful habits and patterns so you can build and maintain meaningful relationships. Easier said than done! Affirms Coach Richard, “the true spiritual truth in life…is being in a relationship and working through the hard stuff.”
Navigating Difficult Conversations
So, you’ve overcome your limiting beliefs and reflected on unhelpful relationship patterns. How do you navigate difficult conversations in real time and get on the same page? The key components according to Coach Richard include: connection and curiosity (by active listening and holding empathy), and meeting others where they are.
