Should You Go Plant-Based?

Plant-Based Blog

Plant-based diets have been quietly picking up steam over the past several years, but when major fast-food chains introduced meatless burgers, a lot more people noticed.

But what is behind the trend? And is it really as healthy as the media portrays?

TaskHuman coaches will help you take a closer look at a plant-based diet, so you can determine if it could be the right fit for you.

1. Health Benefits of a Plant-Based Diet

In many studies, plant-based diets have been shown to reduce the risk of several chronic conditions, including heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and even cancer in some cases. These results can increase longevity and improve outcomes for many people.

Listen as Coach Miriam Campos Root explains her support of plant-based eating:

For many people, the benefits of eating a plant-based diet outweigh the risks.

But what are those risks?

2. Risks of a Plant-Based Diet

Not surprisingly, for people to reap the benefits of a plant-based diet, they need to eat the right plants.

That can be difficult to do. And the risks of not doing so can be great.

Medical News Today reports that eating unhealthy plant-based foods, such as sweets and refined grains, can actually increase the risk of heart disease.

It is important to remember that although something could be labeled as “vegan,” such as vegan chips or vegan cookies, doesn’t mean that they are “healthy” and free to be eaten in large quantities.

Going plant-based can be done safely, but consider consulting with a medical professional to make sure you’re implementing the diet correctly to maximize the benefits and reduce the risks.

If you do decide to try a plant-based diet, there are ways to ease the transition from animal products to their plant-based counterparts.

3. Meatless “Meat”

Perhaps obviously, meat is one of the most common foods people miss when they adopt a plant-based diet.

Vegan aficionados will tell you there are many vegetables that can give you the same “meaty” sensation, but you still may need support in getting there.

Enter meatless meat.

Made from a variety of plant-proteins, the new vegan meats are much closer in taste and texture to actual meat.

Listen as Coach Allison Spears explains how they can help new plant-based dieters:

As Allison said, it’s important to remember that the meat isn’t necessarily a health food, but it can be a great substitute when you need it.

4. Dairy-Free Milk

Dairy-free milk has come a long way from the lonely soy or almond milks of a few years ago.

Now there is a large variety of other types: oat, hemp, pea, and several others are pushing toward center-stage.

The nutritional value of each is as different as their taste, which means you can find some better for cooking and drinking, depending on your preference.

Here’s Coach Allison Spears giving her take on dairy-free milk:
